Since I could hold a pencil I’ve wanted to draw plants, insects and birds. One of my earliest memories is sitting on my grandfather’s lap at his big desk drawing on top of a large sheet of blotting paper. Another is sitting on my mother’s hip watching bees busy in orange blossom in our garden in Zambia. To study in detail, plants and the creatures that attend them, is to catch a glimpse of God’s perfect creations – to appreciate their beauty and understand their purpose in Life.
Botanical Art is my absolute passion. Sitting at my desk with new plant material and an insect or two I’m in my element. Arches hot pressed paper, watercolours, sable brushes and the many tools needed to create a botanical painting and I’m at peace. Vicki Thomas (also from Zambia) was my first botanical watercolour tutor and remains a constant mentor. Courses with Gillian Condy, Elsa Pooley, Sarah Simblet, Ann Swan and Margaret Best have enriched my understanding of paint and technique.
I am currently Chair of the Botanical Artists Association of Southern Africa and have exhibited at the Kirstenbosch Biennale.
